They have to destroy these vehicles because they were in a delivery accident, yet vehicles just like these could be involved in a traffic accident, be repaired and driven again? Aren't parts pulled off of totaled vehicles at wrecking yards every day?
Seems kind of bogus to me. At the very least sell the engines and non safety-critical parts as used parts. I'd rather buy a "train-wrecked" brand new engine than a junkyard one.
If it were only about clearing the tracks quickly they wouldn't spend the extra time to crush them before at least moving them out of the way.
I think it's a case of "that's what insurance is for" mixed with too many lawyers. What a waste!
