Thoughts on next tow vehicle

I have a 2006 Subaru Outback that I have towed my 2009 Coleman Yuma pop up with for several years.

The Outback is getting up there in mileage, and I would like some ideas for a more ideal tow vehicle. I installed a trans temp gauge, trans cooler, and brake controller in the Subaru, but I always had to be super meticulous about packing all the weight behind the camper axle, and this included having to remove the propane bottle and storing it inside the camper too. I'd like a TV with a little more "wiggle room" this time around.

I thought I had things figured out and was zeroing in on a pre-owned 2012-2014 Grand Caravan, but the local dealer says he can't remember the last time he had a used one with the factory tow package. Since this will be a newer vehicle and the warranty will be a big factor for me, I don't know if installing the items I did on my Subaru will affect the warranty.

Other reading I've done seems to indicate that mini vans in general aren't the best tow vehicles, although I am not sure exactly why.

So I was wondering what class or types of vehicles people might recommend? Nothing overkill - but Something where I could tow my Yuma (I took it to the scales loaded about 4 years ago and I think it was around 2200 or 2400 lbs), 2 adults, 1 child and all the assorted camping gear like bikes and\or kayaks etc.

Thank you,

I'd look at a crew cab half-ton pickup. That'd be big enough for your growing family and versitle enough to haul your camping "stuff". 4x4 would be my preference but that's just me. Whatever you get I'd consider the biggest vehicle you can comfortably afford. Just in case you want to upgrade your camper at some time.

    Excellent advice.
  • I really enjoy my Volvo XC70 with the turbo six. Lots of cargo area thats very useable, great seats front and rear. 3500 lbs. towing from factory and mine has 900 lbs. of payload on the door sticker.
With the T6 it has great power and I get 26-28 mpg at 75. I run Premium fuel, plan on 420 miles a tank mixed driving.
