I was a real fan of Airstream and on the forum steady for the 4 years of ownership.Time and time again the older units would come up as the ones to buy.
Its frustrating when you have reached appoint in your rv experience to think you have purchased the best, and find that yes some of the expectations are real, towing, design and ownership pride are all very much a part of an Airstream.
But you soon find, A/S owners are concerned about salty air on ocean beaches, corrosion is huge. You will see ads for sale on units that have never been near either coast. They are very worried about the clear coat peeling, and A/S does nothing. Plus, forget towing in the winter and some road salt. That's shooting yourself in the foot. Thetrapped moisture issue in the floors is well, a mess.
I loved my A/S. It really never let me down. But they are not up to date on new methods and material. Alcoa really stabbed them and no solution as I write. Many are paying big bucks to have clear coat stripped, and polished like the older units. My neighbor thinks I am crazy. The camplite looks like a homemade rig compared to the A/S. My wife is almost ashamed of it! My daughter thinks its ugly. It was an experiment for me, and it has exceeded all expectations.
Now if only Camplite would build a more rounded design similar to A/S?? That would be a winner indeed.
Avion used anodized aluminum which is better than the clear coated aluminum used by Airstream, and Avion never had serious issues. Any steel or aluminum can corrode under the right conditions, even a Livin Lite, Camp Lite with the aluminum studs. If my Avion camper was ruined I would probably buy a Camp Lite camper to replace the Avion.
