When customers start demanding it. The new trucks really do pretty well when used at the horsepower levels of the old trucks. But, to take advantage of the increased power you have to use more fuel. If you want the emphasis on economy the new half ton diesels compare pretty favorably with the diesels from the early '90s.
Also, I am noticing a lot of the new pickups being used to replace medium duty trucks for towing. Compared with what they are replacing the pickups give much better fuel economy.
