Have several overnight stop locations chosen before you leave. You may be too tired to continue after 8 hours, but you might feel like you can knock out 12.
When we head south, it's 1000 - 1300 miles, depending on the final destination. I find overnight waypoints at 8, 10, and 12 hours. DH usually won't drive longer than 10, but you never know. If we are heading to the Keys, we lay over at my parents, or close to it, and that's at the 20 hour mark.
