Even if the registration is up to date, it still wouldn't cover you to drive the van that you just purchased from him. His registration ends when he sells it, at least in Missouri. In Missouri you are no longer allowed to drive any vehicle without at least a temporary tag, there used to be a grace period, but no longer. As far as your home state, only you know the rules and regs for that state.
And who would be crazy enough to allow a complete stranger to drive a newly purchased vehicle on their registration/insurance?
It looks like you have a few choices: drive it without a tag and hope for the best, ask him to let you use his tag to drive on (which is stupid on his part if he goes along with that) and suffer the consequences in the unlikely chance that you do get stopped , or get a temporary tag from your state despite the inconvenience.
