To sway or not to sway?

Hello,
This is my first tt setup! So far so good but i would like to get some experienced opinions. I have an 07 ram 2500 4x4 diesel with a 2010 Nash 22h. I have two hitches. A Reese weight distribution hitch with torsion bars and a straight solid Reese 2" drop hitch. I bought the trailer in Las Vegas and towed it back to Lake Tahoe where I live using the weight distribution hitch without the torsion bars connected. It towed great. But the tounge is about 1.5" too low. I like the hitch and I like the idea of being able to add sway control. The solid hitch is perfect height but I'm not sure if I can add a proper sway control. Do I need it? I have a wife, a 9 month old and a 100 lb dog. We are scheming to be able to hook up and travel for a year or so. So I really want a good set up that won't be a pain to hook up. So here is the big question. Do I need sway control? Any advice would be appreciated.
Here are pics of my set up.
  • With the diesel engine, the loss of front wheel weight is not a factor with your trailer, there is plenty. If the rear sags then WD can be used to lift it back up a little. I usually drive 2500 series pickups to eliminate or reduce the need for WD hitches.
  • In addition to the other posts, check your trucks hitch for weight limits. There are probably two ratings, without WDH and with WDH. It might surprise you that the number without WDH might be exceeded by your TT tongue weight.

However, I would move forward with the WDH and get a new shank if the current one will not work. Get that TT level or slightly nose down.
  • Just because the truck doesn't sag doesn't mean weight hasn't been transferred off the front wheels. That is the purpose of a WD hitch
  • As long as you are within your hitch ratings, I don't think you need it for a small trailer like that. As for raising the ball, have you tried flipping the shank?
  • I can't raise the ball anymore. The truck doesn't sag at all with the trailer, so wouldn't the bars be useless?
  • Get you WD hitch set to the proper height and the bars adjusted so it tows level.

Then you can tell if you need the sway bars or not.

Sway bars should not be used to compensate for poor hitch set up.
