Todays newest Consumer Reports..Chevy and Ram 1500's

Per the todays November 2013 Consumer Report...granted that the Consumer Reports Staff aren't the best Truck guys...but...!

Actually it's a pretty good review overall...no real "winner"...with a conclusion of "2014 Chevy on top, but 2nd place (reworked 2013 Dodge Ram)looks better to some of the test drivers and staff!"

This is in the 1/2 Ton crew cab catagory, V8 with 4WD. Both are as quiet as most luxury cars inside, and get decent fuel mileage.

The Chevy has a lower step in height, consumer reports rates it at 81 points vs Ram's 78, Chevy gets 1 mpg better at 16 mpg...larger bed, more payload capacity and handles a bit better than the Ram.

The Ram for 2013 got a number of improvements and Consumer Reports says is better for day to day driving and rides better, they like the rear coil springs and more comfortable seats, it feels "brawnier" and a "friendlier" control layout, and is quicker. They say the rear seats are the best in class.

The Ford 150 of course is going for a complete makeover in 2015. They better really, really do their homework over at Ford to compete!

Plus the newest 2014 trucks from Nissan most likely will be powered by a diesel...and the Toyota 2014 Tundra (wait till your see that big 2014 bling-bling front grille!)gets it's first major makeover since 2007 are snorting their hot breaths at the heels of Ram, Ford and Chevy!

Ahhhh...competition and evolution really does improve the breed!

P.S.- I'm unbiased at this point regarding Pickup Brands...I don't currently own a Pickup Truck, and despite my screen name I doubt my next truck would be a Ford anyway!

  • I noticed, over the years, that I had made a mistake in my buying choices according to CS. But the cars/trucks I bought ... lasted longer than I wanted.

I've been a subscriber for years for the data they produce Their opinions and conclusions are whacked at the best of times.
They change their policies about testing and recommending at random to suit the brand they worship. It's pathetic really. I owned of of their favorite trucks a few years back, reported I had numerous major problems, never got another automotive survey since. Garbage.

  • Consumer Reports is a good source for information on used trucks and repair histories. Their truck and their car tests are extremely subjective and I have never found them useful when shopping for a new vehicle.

For trucks the people that try to follow the SAE J2807 testing procedure produce the most useful results. Car and Driver did that in 2012 and etrailer.com did it in 2011 for 1-ton trucks. They actually had passengers in the trucks and trailers with heavy loads attached. Imagine that, testing a pickup truck with an actual load.

My Chevy Tahoe with all the seats filled took forever to stop but the magazine tests are done with only the driver onboard and don't reveal this sort of problem. As with other trucks with defects the aftermarket people jump in right away to provide fixes and these fixes are a good indication of what problems one is likely to encounter with a used truck or SUV.
  • I am glad to hear the interior is getting better grades on the GM trucks. A customer of mine bought a new Ram with the top of the line interior, and I have to say, its pretty impressive. The competition is fierce, which benefits anyone in the market.
