"Toddler Proofing"

Went camping for the first time this season and were amazed at what our 1 1/2 yr old could get into. He couldn't get most of the cabinet doors open, but he was great at opening the bathroom door while you were in there. Replaced that with a privacy latch, but the big problem is him messing with the screen door latch! It doesn't offer much resistance as it is and our Summerland sits quite high. If that opened up on him it'd be about a 4' drop to the ground down the metal steps. Anyone have a more secure latch idea, not much room to work with...

I picked up a slide bolt, but the screws would go through the thin aluminum. A short nut and bolt might do the trick, but it's a small area of framework to modify.

You could go with a nut and bolt setup and cut the bolt to length or my preference would be a pop-rivet, pop-rivet "guns" aren't that spendy at harbor freight or other discount stores, and they can be VERY useful in the RV world since nearly everything is assembled using rivets ;)
  • I'd electrify the screen door, but I know I'd be the one getting zapped! I picked up a slide bolt, but the screws would go through the thin aluminum. A short nut and bolt might do the trick, but it's a small area of framework to modify.
  • I would say a gate or a latch up higher or keep the door closed.
  • Have you tried a dog shock collar? Set it on medium and when he touches something he's not supposed to, shock him. If that dosen't work, you can just keep him in his cage.

    Just kidding....

A small baby gate would work but would be a pain. I'd put a small latch that you can reach from the outside to unlatch. In an old apartment I had, I used a small latch for privacy that was made for a window latch. You had to turnit to unlatch it. It worked well, and was very small. Some people put plexiglass over the lower screen as well, so their kids don't push through the screen accidently.
  • What about some kind of sliding latch on the inside, I've often thought about the same to dog-proof our screen door. Should still be open-able from the outside through the slide cover on the screen door by reaching in.
  • Bet he would only do it once....

How 'bout installing a child gate like used to block off stairs or kitchen.
