Sometimes there is a need to extend the length of the post more than the full extent of the tongue jack.
That said, it bears mentioning that the greater the extension of the tongue jack the increased instability and decreased resistance to sideways loading of this "long skinny" post. Putting more piles of wood underneath does nothing to improve this increased instability. The shorter the tongue extension the better.
