Tongue Weight Rating

Hello,

We are buying a trailer for our daughter and son-in-law. They now have a Ford Expedition with 8,900# tow rating. 80% of that is 7,120#, but they should stay below 7,000# loaded (5,500 to 6,000# UVW) because there is an 895# tongue weight rating. The Expy has a GVWR of 7,100, so the full 895# is available with fuel, oil, pax and baggage.

I bought a Sherline so we can test to load between 12% and 13% for tongue weight. We also have a new Equalizer 10,000/1,000 hitch.

Question: Is the 895# rating when loaded with the Eq. hitch or unloaded? With the Eq. hitch in place, the load on the Expy is about 80% and 20% is shifted to the trailer dual axles.

Thanks from a trailer "newbie,"
