I'd used the trailer brakes by themselves to pull out of swaying situations before, but this came on so sudden I couldn't get my hand on the switch fast enough. again.
First Glad everyone is O.K. and just this statement can be used to highlight a "learning opportunity". If you had had as you say swaying conditions (i.e. more than one) before then that should IMO have been an indicator that something was wrong somewhere with the basic stability of your towing combination. I have towed full profile trailers from 27 to 31' for over 30 years and well in excess of 100K miles all over the U.S. in all sorts of conditions including the winds out west and have never had to use my trailer brakes to reduce a swaying incident.
I'm not trying to throw stones here, but anyone reading this and have had an sway incident where they had to use their trailer brakes to recovern ...especially if more than once ... should be again IMO doing a serious investigation of their towing combination since there is a high degree of probablility that something is seriously wrong somewhere that needs to be corrected.
