Larry,
Whats the highest straight line wind you have towed in?
Sustained 40 with gusts in excess of 60 out west back in 2004 on I-80 from I-5 in Ca over the Sierras into Nv/Ut/Wy/SD and on thru Chicago and back to the East Coast. IIRC one day around the Bonneville Salt Flats the cross winds were in excess of 40mph and I had to slow down to around 50 and it was a very tiring day driving since it was like I had 18 wheelers buzzing by me all day constantly. I was towing an VERY HIGH profile (almost 12' in back) 27' trailer at the time using only a single friction bar type sway system. I think that was the single worst day towing in my 30+ years of towing. Remember we are talking about out of control SWAY which is the multiple back on forth swing of the trailer which is not naturally dampened by either your sway system or the forward motion of the towed combination. I also lived and towed all over Ca and Nv when I lived there for almost 8 years including all those sky high bridges over ravines that even have the wind socks at each end. I've also traveled coast to coast towing multiple times along both I-10 and I-40/44/15 their entire length. The only two major Interstates that I have not towed on more than once are I-70 and I-94 out west across the plains states. If it's windy I do slow down and don't try and drive like I would when wind is not either a known issue or a potential issue.
