Totaled Truck...CARFAX

My previous truck was totaled several months ago. After the insurance settlement, it was towed away. Today I found it on a used car lot (not dealer) but it appears to have been repaired although I don't know how considering the damage to the frame/suspension.. The salesman said he will get a CARFAX report if I was really interested. Doesn't CARFAX note vehicles that have been previously totaled? Just curious as I have a new truck now but worry about the next person that might get this vehicle that was severely damaged?

When we traded the car in we let them know that it was in an accident. They said.. we already pulled the CarFax and its no big deal... CarFax said "light rear end collision."

That being the case, I guess mine would be considered a scratch? :B
  • When you say totaled, hopefully DMV will show salvage on the documentation.
  • I just recently purchased my first used car, which is no longer made though popular with owners who tend to hold onto them. The CarFax report indicated no "reported" accidents. However, I was lucky to have most of the records from the previous owner which indicated an USAA insurance claim for a collision. After carefully reviewing the paperwork, I determined that the damage was largely cosmetic, no frame damage, though $2000+ to repair.

The lesson being that services like CarFax appear to list only what has been reported from their sources. In fact, I'm not sure what the criteria is for reporting damaged vehicles in their report? No accidents not necessarily meaning the vehicle was not involved in some type of accident?
  • My daughter bought a car that was listed as minor damage on carfax. We later determined that their idea of minor and ours two very different things. Body shop friend looked under neath and could see where quite a bit of work had been done.
Maybe minor to some but not us
  • My wife was rear-ended hard in a Kia Sorento... twisted the entire car... car was too new and we have a 75% rule in Tennessee for totaling a car. Repair was around 13k or so.

When we traded the car in we let them know that it was in an accident. They said.. we already pulled the CarFax and its no big deal... CarFax said "light rear end collision."

At that point I lost all faith in CarFaxJokeScam.com... I KNOW that it wasn't a light hit.. car was nearly totaled.

Bet that CarFax on your old truck says.. minor collision.

    Sheesh...

  • I'm sure CarFax will note it if someone tells them or they can find the info some place. From who or where to they get their info?

Did you look underneath to see what the frame looks like where the main damage was done?
