Your opinions are all what I was expecting, and are really inline with mine. I've researched this more then I care to admit, but I still keep looking for a different answer. :) I struggle passing up a deal!
I knew Payload was going to be my biggest limiting factor. The part that is tough is to know exactly what that Tongue Weight calculates to be when using a Weight Distribution Hitch. A guy wouldn't really know until they pulled up to a scale. At least I thought the Weight Distribution hitch redistributed some of the tongue weight to the front as well as to the trailer.
My truck is a 2009 Ram 1500 Crew Cab with 20" 275 65 20's, 5'6" box. Factory was 275 60 20's. So the new tires are heavier and taller. (not helping with tow ratings).
-Max Trailer according to my manual is 7400 lbs.
-Payload is 1380
-GCWR 13,000
While the Payload didn't change any in 2010, the same truck in 2010 with no changes to the Powertrain had a Max Trailer of 9900 lbs. and a combined GCWR of 15,500 lbs.
I suppose it's all irrelevant because the Payload is the limiting factor. I just wasn't sure how big of a deal it was to exceed the payload, and how much of a difference the Weight Distribution Hitch made to the tongue weight.
I would NEVER be hitting the Rockies with this setup, or any long distance trip for that matter. I understand distance really doesn't matter, but being safe whenever we hookup does. I'd mainly doing a few short trips from home. Don't get me wrong I know the best answer is a 2500. Unfortunately, a 2500 just isn't in the cards right now.
So how big of a deal is it being over the trucks Payload?
