Tow Rating

I had a post all typed out and hit the wrong key and lost it all.

We bought a Ford Explorer SUV Eddie Bauer Edition, with an all wheel drive, 16" tires, 5 Liter engine, 373 rear end, 4 speed automatic transmission,

We don't have a camper at this time but would like to know what the tow rating is for this vehicle. When we get one it won't be a large one but we need to know so we don't over do.
  • Go to ford.com website under ownership then customer service you can find the owners manual. Max towing is 6700lbs with a max frontal area of 50 sq. ft.
  • It really depends on whether or not it came with the towing package.
Among other things it will have a larger trans cooler up front. Someone versed (maybe a dealer) in Fords could tell you if it was so equipped.
My guess is that with that diff ratio it probably has it.
  • It SOUNDS as if this is a used vehicle which means you probably have no actual warranty concerns. This being the case, from a SAFETY standpoint what you need to watch is the GVWR of the Explorer. Make sure that when it's fully loaded as it would be for towing, you have enough payload available (difference between actual weight and GVWR) to handle the fully loaded tongue weight. Tongue weights are variable in nature as they change based on how the trailer is loaded. They generally range from a low of 10% and high of 15% of the actual weight of the trailer. I would recommend you base decisions on the 15% of GVWR so you're figuring in the heaviest it will be.

For information about the actual factory assigned tow rating, Ford should be able to furnish you with this information based on your VIN. It is different based on how your vehicle is equipped. Lower gearing gets higher tow rating etc.

Good luck with your RV selection / Skip
  • Look by the driver's door for ratings as well as your owners manual. The Eddie Bauer Edition was probably not well suited to towing. Special additions tend to add comforts like softer ride that detract for towing capacity. Numbers range from 5,600 t 7,300# depending upon year (which you omitted) and tow package, etc...

Also depends on number of people and stuff you jam into your SUV.
