Tow Vehicle - Dual tires in back or single? Which is best?

I posted about my son in law looking at Tow Vehicles and shared all the great opinions with him. Thanks to everyone. He is actively shopping now.

He is looking at one Dodge Ram TV for sale now that has "Duallies" in the back. I know I have these on my Class C but are they a good thing for towing a trailer?

I imagine they would provide additional stability and maybe better braking. Are there any downsides? Which is best - duallies or single rear tires?

It is not a 4X4.
  • If you are towing a TT then you do not need the dually. Also I have towed six different trailers over the years with 2WD only and never once would have needed 4WD. I would not take my trailer anywhere that would require 4WD to get there and out.
  • I asked the same question in the TC forum a couple days ago, although I was trying to balance a daily driver versus load capacity. If I were buying a vehicle that was not a daily driver, I would get DRW, no questions asked. Yes, you have to buy two more tires, but you get a lot more stability.

Just watch the "hips" when making sharp rights.

I know that 4X4 sure does come in handy when moving around the CG and some unpaved parts the roads there.. Most newer truck come with 4X4 as standard options it seems...

I end up back off the trails alot and sure could not live without 4 wheel drive...

  • The dealer is not in a negotiating mood. Now checking out a 2007 Dodge that has less miles and about $1,000 cheaper.. Very clean with just about all options except for the 4X4.
  • A dually would be a very good towing platform especially if they are contemplating getting a heavier trailer in future.

    A 30' Airstream doesn't require a dually tow vehicle.

What happened to the '06 Dodge that they were looking at?
  • Best? All depends on what is being towed.

I think you are asking the wrong questions. The first thing is to find out the weight of the trailer also the weight of all cargo in trailer and in truck. Then you can find the truck which is rated to tow the trailer.
