Tow vehicle advice: 4x4 or 4x2?

Forty years in the road building business and mostly purchased 4X2's. In an out of ditches and driving on unpaved roads a lot of the time. I always laughed when I noticed how many fancy 4X4's were parked in front of the office buildings downtown while I was on my way to work out in the country. There were a few times when I had to hook onto one of our machines, but no more often than the 4X4 guys except I wasn't quite as far out in the muck.

Having said that, Old Rex could get stuck in a mud puddle. He would go in slow, almost stop, then dig a big hole with his 4X4 flinging mud in every direction.
