We have been full timers for 10 years with RWD. We were working at Sedalia MO. a few years ago & they had 17" of snow shut down I 70 for two nights. Had to get a hotel room for four night as we could not get to our 5er. If we would have had 4X4 I think we could have got to our rig as they did not clean the road. But when it was time to leave 4X4 would not have gotten our 15K fifth wheel out only chains would work. We had a ice hill we had to go up & if I would have had 4X4 would have most likely not put chains on & would have jack knifed. With $500 deductible would have cost more than hotel room. Oh yes with chains never slipped just walked up the hill. A RWD pick up tried 3 times to go up the hill & he was not pulling anything so do not think 4X4 would have helped.
4X4 cost more in fuel, & big bucks when it goes out. But number one my wife is short, round & said she will not climb up into a 4X4. So I have a set of chains + a set of emergency tire chains. Yes chains may be a pain to put on, but I think they will pull harder than 4X4. So for once every 10 years that I need help, will stay with RWD & carry chains.
