Tow vehicle advice

I just recently traded for the 2005 (see below). It took 6 months to find it close enough to be able to test drive and do the deal. Anyway, I used the towing guides at http://www.trailerlife.com/trailer-towing-guides/ as a guide for towing capacity. I found the numbers to be very good.

I got the truck that I did because I'm a Chevy nut. Having said that, I wouldn't get anything less than a 3/4 ton with the biggest engine or go diesel. Plus on Chevy the Allison transmission is great.

I currently have an 08 Tundra 4X$ 5.7 dbl cab, that year w/ tow package shows 10,000 +/- tow capacity. We easily tow or 29RKSS Puma TT, unlaoded weight was about 6900, we easily haul lots of items, weight. So I'm sure we tip 9000 total lbs of TT plus cargo, peoeple etc. It tows excellent. My ? is now we are looking to sell both truck and TT sooner or later depending on deals.

I have rad TONS of forums, charts GVW, GCWR, front & rear axle weight blah blah, tongue weight and since we will be going to a 5th whell king pin weight,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

My understanding gets so confusing when understanding what weight X truck will tow 5th wheel. So in general my ? is if I get a gas large V-8 5.7 or 6.o or equivelint in a 2500 truck, whatever brand, with tow package, just approximately what weight can I tow w/ a good hitch, or give me a few examples.......plz if it;s enough info there to do so?

The 5th wheels we like are around 11-12K unloaded, 15-16K max w/ loads

Just looking for an avg or safe bet safe zone... We have always stayed to where our max load tried to stay 1000Lbs under the max allowed for extra safety in the past hauls,

Or give me an easy understanding chart. I can't g weigh a new truck and 5th wheel together for GCGW until I buy obviously. Most charts and forums vary & drive me wacko. Plus I rarely find the tongue weight or king pin weight when searching used 5th wheels online etc. I am leaning to a chevy 2500 gas or maybe duramax.

I towed a 2013 I-Go 220RB (4995 pounds dry, about 6200 loaded) with a 2011 Ram 1500 4x4 QC Hemi, 6.4 ft bed, Equalizer load leveling sway hitch and aftermarket brake controller. It did fine for short trips, but I was always white knuckled on the interstates. It always felt a bit like the tail wagging the dog. I just wasn't comfortable with this arrangement for long cross country trips, so last year I bought a leftover 2013 Ram crew cab 4x4 2500 SWR 6.7L diesel with an 8ft bed. This is a dream arrangement, and the truck absolutely dominates the load. It simply idles up steep grades with this TT, and doesn't even break a sweat. Getting diesel fuel at truck stops is so much easier with all the extra room to navigate this 49 foot long train. The exhaust brake is also magnificent, and the integrated brake controller is much better than an add on aftermarket controller.

We did a 3000 mile trip last May, and it was so easy. With the half ton, I wouldn't let my wife drive when towing, and she felt the "interstate stress" when we were towing with that arrangement. On another trip, my wife drove 4 hours on the interstate with this Ram 2500 and TT, and said "it was easy". Having a powerful enough engine in a truck is important, but having a truck that weighs more than the load is even more important imho. This new truck weighs 7581 pounds, where as the 1/2 ton weighed about the same as the loaded TT. I think truck tow ratings are overrated. If you want to feel comfortable/happy when you tow, I suggest you divide the truck tow rating by 2.

Another vote for the F150 Ecoboost with tow package.

A properly equipped F-150 will work well but you need to understand what that means.

The weights you posted are dry weights . There is no industry standard to determine a dry weight. When you add your optional equipment and the trailer is ready to be shipped it should be weighed by the mfg. and a label installed. That way you know , if it becomes overloaded , it was you ( the owner ) that did it by adding too much personal stuff .
I own a Jay Flight 23RB . Judging by my real weight rolling down the road (being extremely lightly packed) , IMO, your TT will be close to that GVWR of 6000# with a hitch weight of approx. 700#, as mine is.




1500 as a hauler ...I understand trying to have a less expensive truck doing the job to tow and also have a truck that rides nice while not towing.
A 1500 will do the job towing 6000 lbs but you have go to a scale and have it all weighed and learn how to properly weigh a TT combo.

IM not an engineer or any kind of expert. Im basing what I say on my years experience towing. Driving down the road in a straight line with no events might not be the same as tying to control a maxed out rig during an emergency maneuver. A 1500 has a softer suspension than a 2500. The more heavy 2500 might offer the operator a wider window of time to regain control operating a near maxed out rig.

Test drive both 1500 and 2500 trucks and see how the empty ride feels to you. Then decide. You can always lighten your load but with a 2500 you won't have to give it thought.

I'm 1500 pounds heavier than that, and the Ecoboost tows it effortlessly.

The newer Ecoboost 150s and even much older (I had a 2004 Supercrew with a 5.4, 3:73 axle, and tow package)could easily pull and stop a trailer of that size. I pulled a much heavier FW. Do make sure the hitch receiver is rated up to 10,000lbs and 1,000lb hitch weight and use a WDH.

sforl, consider the Ram 1500 3.0 V6 EcoDiesel with the tow package. 240 HP & 420lb/ft of torque.

I think it's rated at 27MPG on the highway. I have the same TT on order and my tow vehicle is a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the EcoDiesel.

Lots of torque and great mileage. Something to consider as a option.
