Alright, the Traverse website shows that the GVWR is 6400 lbs and the curb weight is 4646 lbs. Does that mean the payload capacity is 1754 lbs?
So, the tt loaded is estimated to be 3500, and if I include my family driving in the tv I would add another 550 lbs to bring the total weight I am moving to 4000 lbs. The tongue weight would be approximately 500 lbs, which would bring my total to 4500 lbs "moving." This total would cause me to be 500 lbs above 80% of towing capacity.
Am I doing the math correctly, and if I am, does this put me out of a "safe zone" to be towing?
Thanks again!
That's the correct way to calculate payload capacity. You don't want to exceed tow vehicle GVWR with a travel trailer. Be aware that the published curb weights are often a bit low, althought they're more accurate than they used to be and you've got lots of margin there.
The GVWR of the trailer is the total weight of the trailer, including the tongue weight. You're adding the tongue weight twice. Correct number is 4000 lbs. Actually, you don't need to add the weight of the driver either because that's factored into the tow rating.
So, looks good.
