A family of 4 will want one of the heaviest duty higher payload rigs. At least 2000 lbs of payload. I needed a typical today 2500 back in the day with a family of 6 pulling a trailer of this size. I had a 9200 gvwr K3500, empty was 6600 lbs, loaded with family, dogs, bikes, hitch weight, generator some times....truck gvw was 9000-9500 lbs, trailer axels were in the 6-6500 range.
The kids may/will want to bring a friend, so the op may end up a family of 6.....
So no, a 25 series truck is not overkill! from a payload perspective.

the TT loaded is 6000lb. No 2500 needed. If a person wants it, that is one thing. But it is not needed for so light a TT. Next people will be saying he needs a Kenworth
Yeah, my trailer really light loaded was LESS than 6000 lbs. As noted, pulling the trailer with a smaller V8 or even 6 banger is not the issue. It is PAYLOAD. Even the OP has stated some 15 series trucks will be low on payload or below what he needs. A 2500 crew cab with an SB8 will move that setup with out issues, handle the trailer, along with whatever the family throws at the OP.
I also stated, he may end up of family of 6. Why? my sister and I used to bring a friend when camping with out parents. So those trips, we were not a family of 4 per say, but 6! If the kids are adult sized teens. you are not talking potentially 900+ lbs of people. Or 1200-1300 like my family of 6 weighed when my kids were teens! I have big kids in all directions! 3 of us are over 6' tall, the rest 5'7" to 5'9"!
A 25 series is not that much more than a 15.
