Tow with Chevy Bolt?

Hey, Folks. I'm thinking about leasing or buying a Chevy Bolt. Officially there is no tow capacity though I understand I can have a Class 1 hitch installed and tow up to 2000 lbs. I'm considering buying something like a T@B/Little Guy trailer. I'm wondering if anyone tows with a Bolt? Also wondering how much it impacts the battery range? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

probably against the "rules". especially on such a "puny" vehicle.

  • X2 - Don't do if you are leasing. Check the actual contract terms of the lease, but there's probably some verbiage to allowing them to penalize you at turn-in, for modifying it or using it beyond the factory ratings.

If you buy it, do what you want. Hitch receivers are available for up to to 200 pounds tongue weight, 2000 pounds towing. Pulling a camper trailer on the highway will result in miserable range however. You'd be fine towing a cargo trailer in town, but pulling a larger trailer on the highway, all of your power is going to moving air. You'll probably on have 1/3 the range of normal. Tab trailers look like they should pull easily, but most folks see zero fuel economy improvement over their former box-shaped trailers, possibly because the the air-gap between the trailer and tow vehicle is longer.

Also, anything larger than a small popup will have more than 200 pounds rongue weight.

  • I have been driving electric since 2011 but never towing with it. I would expect range to be cut in half. Need L3 charging every 100 miles and could be awkward with a trailer. I wish I could recommend something else but the only option is Tesla for a bit more $$$$. I would expect more options available in 2 to 5 years.
