I agree with APT. Look for a 8.1L Suburban with the 4.10 axle ratio. I focused in on the 2003-2006 years and found a nice 2003 recently from the south with no rust and 133k miles on it. I've got everything fixed and working and my total investment is around 13k or less including the new shocks I need to install in the spring, fixed leaks (engine and front axle), coolant flush, plugs/wires, delivery expenses (flight, hotel, gas), tax, title and plate. It looks like new inside, very nice outside, and drives great. I've only had one short tow with my trailer (5600 lbs) and it worked great. It surprised me because it seemed to tow it just as effortlessly as the 2005 F350 6.0 diesel I borrowed this summer. If you don't like the fuel economy or still want the torque of a diesel, you can still do the Duraburb conversion. I think I'll get 10+ around home driving in the country/city and I got 12.6 driving back from TN where I picked it up and that was with a miss due to a need for new plugs/wires and driving with the faster traffic the entire way. Those Duraburbs sure look appealing. As an extra vehicle for me, it is probably not worth it as we're not putting gas in it year round.
