Towing 5700 (dry) - 7700 (wet) travel trailer with tahoe

I just wanted some people advice on towing a trailer that's max weight of 7700 lbs wet, with a 2015 tahoe (8300 lbs towing capacity). We probably have it closer to wet when the tanks are full on the trailer.

Would it be safe? Right now I have a Ram 2500 cummins that pulls it, but we almost never drive the truck (my wife or I), unless it's to pull the trailer, or if one of us has the other car, and we need to go somewhere. So we were thinking of getting the Tahoe, as an all around better family car, that can also tow.
  • I just upgraded from a SUV to a truck. Only reason why I upgraded was because my trips were getting longer, and the SUV I had was real small. BUT, if I wasn't taking the longer trips, I would still probably use the SUV. The one thing I will miss about the SUV compared to the truck is maneuverability. Just do some quick numbers (Payload, tongue weight, etc) and see how close you are. And, your usage. Then maybe, the numbers will be "Close enough for government work" for your types of trips, and it may work for you.
  • I'm not a fan of a half ton TV pulling (and stopping) that much weight. With the 5.3 V8 and 3.08 standard gears, I don't think you would be very happy with it's towing ability. I'm shopping for a TV for a similar TT and I'm looking at the 3/4 ton with the 6.0, preferably with 4.10 gears. The 2500 has a much huskier chassis and brakes than the 1500.
  • Traded my mid-sized SUV for the F150 and never looked back.......

    In a nut shell.

  • There are 3 of us.

Yeah, that's what I thought - loading up the Tahoe would totally put us over the payload capacity. :/

Really sucks, because we love the trailer; but we're stuck with a massive truck that neither of us really drives much. I don't hate the truck, but it's something that the wife isn't comfortable driving. Just sits around too much...
  • I wouldn't do it. Too much trailer for half ton Tahoe. The tougue weight (likely around 1000 lbs) plus passengers will exceed payload of Tahoe. Plus short wheelbase will cause sway.
  • How many people and how much weight in the Tahoe? Now add the hitch and tongue weight. As with any 1/2-ton, you'll run out of payload before hitting the max tow capacity.
