We have been towing for four years with a Tacoma Off-Road model -- it is great. Our trailer is small and light. We go absolutely everywhere -- steep mountains, hot deserts, ice and snow, thousands of miles.
We did have a problem with the rear leaf springs -- a known issue. Toyota fixed it. Otherwise, no problems. Check out our trip blog in my signature, below, if you are interested in the kinds of places the Tacoma has taken us.
I should add that although we get 10 mpg while towing, I often get over 20 mpg on the LA freeway system with careful driving techniques.
