Went from Las Vegas to CA last year through Death Valley - there isn't much of anything out there to find. If you're going west, make sure your rig can handle miles of steep climbs coming up out of Death Valley. If you go east, make sure your brakes are in perfect condition for going down the grades.
We climbed up and out of DV after the NHRA Finals in Las Vegas with a 40' DP pulling a Jeep and we did fine, but you have stay in your engine's power band and watch out for the idiots in your lane as they come around the corners too fast - there's no shoulders on most of that road.
