If your towing a large trailer on 1000 mile trips on a regular basis get a diesel.
A 2500- 3/4 ton is is adequate however a 3500 1 ton truck will provide more payload (carrying capacity). The price difference between a 3/4 ton vs. a 1 ton is negligible. There is also negligible difference in maintenance cost between a gasser and a diesel.
A diesel will simply provide better MPG towing and non towing, more power (especially towing), more traveling range (you can travel much further between fuel stops). Ability to fuel at truck stops (no need to squeeze into gas stations while towing). Diesel will have a much quieter cab because the engine works at lower RPM's no loud revving engine.
In short a diesel will provide a more refined/ relaxed towing experience.
If you are committed to making 1000 mile trips while towing a diesel is a no brainer. AS you are experiencing currently you have the wrong truck! All pick ups are not created equal!
