We have a 2015 Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi, 3.92 rear end and tow package. Looking at at 2 33' TT with 7900# unloaded weight with tongue weight of about 600#'s on one and 1000# on the other. I know I need to watch the GVW on the truck having only 1600 capacity. It will usually be just 2 of us traveling so do not expect a huge amount of extra weight in the truck.
Ram says 10k tow rating....so how will the truck handle this load??? Who else is towing similar weight with similar rig??
Here are my thoughts...
33' long is an awful long trailer for a half ton. If you are experienced towing, you should know if you will be comfortable towing that long of a trailer.
7900 unloaded weight is likely closer to 8500 lbs loaded. 12-15% tongue weight puts you at 1020 lbs to 1275 lbs. Add an additional 50+/- lbs for your weight distribution hitch. What does Ram rate their receiver for?
1600 lbs payload with the lower end weight of 1020 tongue weight plus 50 WDH weight has you at 1070. That leaves 530 lbs for you and your wife and any gear you haul in the camper. That's not a lot of wiggle room
I had a Tundra, loved it. 5.7 had plenty of power (mileage was horrible with the new trailer though) and the brakes always felt solid. My trailer weighs 8500 lbs for local trips, up to 9500 lbs when fully loaded for 7+ day trips. With the wife, two toddlers, 3 dogs, bikes, kids toys, etc we ended up being over our Tundra's payload by a little bit.
The Tundra handled the weights perfectly fine. Never felt out of control, never felt I lacked braking power, never felt I was getting pulled or pushed around. In fairness, my Tundra had factory E rated tires rather than the standard P rated on most half tons. I had an Equal-I-Zer hitch which helped prevent any sway at all. I was just uncomfortable being over my ratings and always being concerned about how much stuff we could bring.
It can be done, as long as you pay attention to your ratings and keep your weights in check. If you are a competent driver and have a properly set-up weight distribution hitch and can keep your weights in check, you can handle this trailer. On the other hand, if you like to haul a lot of stuff (like my bride does) or if you are a learning driver, this might be too much for you.
Good luck and keep yourself safe!
