Everyone,
The panic stop was an extreme situation; I fully understand the EB will do nothing in an emergency, as there is not enough time for it to be effective. To be fair, I did see the tail lights in plenty of time for an EB to be effective, I just overestimated our speed. I could have downshifted and let that and the EB slow us down enough to use the service brakes without drama. And, yes, I meant 10'; anything closer than 1 car length is too close for comfort, and not knowing if we were going to stop in time didn't help.
I'm not running a VGT anymore, so no EB.
I can convert to a dually cheaper than going 19.5's; I see people selling their wheels and tires all the time for pretty cheap. It's also easier to find 17" tires. I do agree about stablility and safety, and wanted a dually originally for that purpose; like someone else posted, I couldn't find what I wanted in my timeframe.
Trailer is going in for a major inspection after Christmas, and I'll have CW check the brakes this time; the last shop may have missed something. I tested them and they seemed to hold just fine with the manual control activated. Controller is a Tekonsha P2.
First thing you should do is get a better controller. I have had the P2 and it is marginal. I have heard the P3 is much better. I would recommend a MaxBrake but they are no longer being made.
