Anyway - the Aerostar. We had an '87 XLT, loved it, but it went to hell at around 120k. I would be interested in another, what with Internet forums. Ironically as with other trucks, the smaller (3 L) has a higher tow rating than the 4L. Most Dakotas have higher tows and hauls than the Ram 1500's. I assume weight difference in the Dodges and weight capacity in the Ford.
I had a '96 Aerostar that I ordered new. At the time the 3.0 did not have a higher tow rating, the GCWR with the 4.0 was higher. I towed a 21 foot hybrid that had a GVWR of 4200 lbs with a running weight of about 3800. It towed pretty well, towing mpg was about 11-12 and it would pull our Cascade passes at 45 with no issues. That's not fast, but tow vehicles at that time had half the hp of today's. We used the Aerostar for a couple of years before trading it on an Expedition with the Triton 4.6 V8. Surprisingly, it didn't really tow much better power-wise, but towing mpg dropped to about 8.
Of course, the problem with towing with an Aerostar today is finding one that isn't ready for the wrecking yard.
