I don't know why Mike Up is so against the EcoBoost, other than jealousy. The low-end torque is much better with the EcoBoost, developing over 400 lb ft at 2K RPM, compared to less than 250 lb ft for the 5L V8. Yes, there were some problems with early EcoBoosts, but I venture to guess that most were corrected while still under warranty.
Definitely no jealousy here as my dealer had tons of Ecoboost trucks configure the way I needed. I actually had to do a dealer search for my 5.0l truck.
The Ecoboost only has more torque in the upper gears as was shown by pick up trucks.com and Ford's own admission. The 5.0l can actually have better torque with lower gears.
But I guess most people only gauge low end torque by upper gear cruising rpms, not acceleration from a stop (that uses lower gears) that can be just as important.
For that reason, the ecoboost will never replace the power of bigger displacement none turbo engines that have similar power and RPM ratings.
