Scott, for your diesel you are 100% correct.
For my gasser, I
need to be at 3,600 RPM or much higher to maximize torque and get up towards max HP when climbing at altitude. I live at 2,300' and camp all summer at 7,000'-10,000'. Not all of those climbs are gradual. Even the Interstate segments benefit from locking it in 3rd gear and let my engine do what it was designed for.
My next trip is to a 10K' site and I complied with my wife's request to preview the site 2 trips ago by towing up from 8K' where that weekend's campground was. I verified 2nd gear lets me get there at a reasonable speed for conditions and just a bit more noise from under the hood.
