Maybe I feel differently since I actually owned a 2004 F-250 regular cab with the 5.4 that would not get out of its own way towing 7,000 pounds. "If" you pushed the pedal long enough and hard enough, it would get you there. I would not want to follow one up any kind of grade towing 10,000 pounds. The key word in my statement is "owned". I upgraded at considerable expense.
Tom, not ALL of the 5.4s are the same..
my 2003 AND your 2004 are the TWO VALVE 5.4s with 265 HP with 4 speed trans..
The OPs 2005 5.4 SHOULD be a THREE VALVE 300HP with 300 HP..
BIG DIFFERENCE between the 2V and 3V in pulling power, I should know since we alos have a 2006 5.4 with 3V engine. Night and day when comparing, the 3V hands down should have plenty of power to handle at least 9K..
Not to mention 4 speed trans vs 5 speed trans, the 5 speed has a much lower first gear, gets those heavy loads moving a lot easier and 5 speed gains the tow/haul feature which adjusts the shift strategy to take better advantage of the 5 speed gearing and the additional 3V HP..
I have towed 9K behind both and the 3V has plenty of ump for it..
While the 3V 5.4 is not in the same league as our newest member of the family a 2013 with 6.2.. The 3V 5.4 does do a decent job..
Just have to understand that there is some limitations and towing heavy loads you are not going to win any races, it WILL get you there though..
