Tom, not ALL of the 5.4s are the same..
my 2003 AND your 2004 are the TWO VALVE 5.4s with 265 HP with 4 speed trans..
The OPs 2005 5.4 SHOULD be a THREE VALVE 300HP with 300 H

I fell for that one too. I tried a 2006 F-150, thinking that three valves were better than two. Not much improvement and the soft suspension had me looking at another real truck within two years. A Silverado 2500 HD provided the power and load capacity that I was searching for. Of course that meant that I could now tow a fifth wheel trailer which was my next purchase. I won't go into all my trades and trailers, but I have experimented a lot. A 2013 2500 HD was my most capable tow vehicle and my current F-150 is the most fun.
Not sure why you think the F250 had a soft suspension..
Neither our 2003 or 2006 have a soft suspension, rides pretty darn firm.. both 2003 and 2006 have oem helper springs, when loaded we just barely touch the helpers.
Both of those were far better than the 97 LIGHT DUTY F250 which was a rebadged F150 with HD package for that year (they had light duty F250 which was based on the F150 platform and the Super Duty which was on the same platform as the F350).
Now our 2013, that suspension is MUSHY when under load, common complaint with 2011 and up.. Squats real easy.. Drops an inch and half more than the 2003 and 2006 for the same load.. Wished the 2011 had helpers, missed that when ordering, would have had to get slide in camper package..
