Towing with an Expedition

Hi everyone, new guy here whose been reading for a few weeks now and I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a new trailer.

What I have:

2008 Expedition

Tow package
Tow limit- 9000 lb.
Front GAWR-3550
Rear GAWR-4250
GVWR-7700
GCWR-15000

Trailer I want to get:

2014 Jayco Jay Flight Swift 267BHS

GVW-7500 lb.
Dry Weight-5315
Payload-2185
Hitch Weight-625

Does this seem reasonable to tow? I really don't see putting anywhere near a ton of payload in the trailer. I also will be getting a WDH with sway control. (Recommendations?)

Thanks in advance.

  • As a former Expy owner, I'd advise you to keep the total weight of the trailer under 6,000 lbs. Yes, the book says you can tow more, but it won't be pleasant.

I liked towing our other trailer (4,400 lbs. weighed at scales) and it was nice being able to hold the family in the seats and the dog in back.

My new trailer weighs 7,400 lbs. and the Expy could not be leveled with the Reese weight distribution hitch I had.
  • According to Ford's 2008 RV & Towing Guide, your max hitch wt on the Expy is 920# on page 29.

The Expy gross wt is 7400#. The curb wt is 5578#. That leaves a total payload capacity of 1822# for passengers, gear, and trailer tongue wt.

After loading 1500Lbs of gear, water and propane into the TT, your tongue wt should be 886Lbs.

    Yes.

It will make for a pretty full load and some 3/4 tonners may brag that they out perform you, but you said the magical "R" word.
  • Your EX has an advantage over most other large SUV's and that is the IRS.
  • Love my Exp. As long asd you do not load much in Exp you should be fine. Note your actual hitch weight should be 13% to 15% of the FULLY LOADED TT. Most folks load at least 1000# over UVW, so hitch weight would be, in that case, 819# to 945#. My 10k Equalizer does fine, but it needed EIGHT washers. You need to watch the Exp rear GAWR.

We tow with self, wife (neither of us are skinny), and 58# dog in Exp. Works great, but much more in Exp would overload rear axle.

Did I mention how great it tows!
