I have owned two F-250's with the 5.4L and towed 9k on flat ground with no issues. For your application the 5.4L 3v (2005-up) would work fine, the 6.8L V-10 will work better. If you go with a 5.4L a 4.10 rear would make a lot of difference IMO. My current 6.8L 4.10 is a towing machine and like the 5.4L is extremely dependable.
