Towing with extension suggestions?

Hello. I haven’t been on in a while as everything has been good with the truck, camper, and boat. Until recently. First, I bought a bigger boat, the good. It’s a Defiance 220 Pilothouse. With the 100 gallon fuel tank full the boat, stuff, and trailer is probably about 6000#’s. I’m going to go weigh it when I get back from vacation. The Lance 825 is still awesome. The 2008 F250 diesel though literally became a money pit in the past 2 years, being stranded for a lift pump, then the $4000 cab off fuel pump. Another sensor problem and I had it. Not in the budget but I bought a 2018 Ford F-350 Lariat crew cab 4x4, diesel of course.

I need 24" of extension to hook the boat up and tow with the camper on. What are your suggestions?

The old boat only weighed about 3000# and I just ran an inexpensive 18" extension I think it was. I have not ordered tie downs yet because I have a feeling I’m going to bite the bullet and get the superhitch magnum with 24" extension for safety. My tow is 200 miles of windy highway from Redding to Eureka on 299 about 10 times a year and maybe a trip to Oregon. I’ve looked at the Reese extension and will be right at the limit without a weight distribution hitch, I don’t have any experience with these, and under with one.

I did put the camper in the bed of the truck and hooked the boat up and towed it a mile in the neighborhood and definitely seems like there is plenty of power to haul everything. But I can’t make sharp turns otherwise the anchor pulpit will hit the camper, especially the ladder side. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  • The limits you see when towing with an extension are due to the SuperTruss strength st a particular length and are the same for the 20k SuperHitch and 30k SuperHitch Magnum.

    * On further research, it looks like the Magnum is only one available for your model year truck. Torklift's website is currently down for me verify this, so I was working off cached paged. You may want to call them for options before placing an order: (844) 369-9358
  • They don’t show an option less than the magnum. I believe if they did it would be equal or less than the factory receiver capacity but without the double setup. I’ll email them and find out.
  • Although your receiver is strong, it was not designed to have leverage applied 2’ behind it. You will be better off with a SuperHitch and SuperTruss. You do not need the 30k LB Magnum unless you plan to tow over 20 k lbs directly at the receiver without an extension.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. The truck is a SRW and has a 2.5" receiver.
  • Super hitch. don't muck around. I tow a 7000# horse trailer on a 48" super truss with a WD hitch and have done so safely for 8 years on windy mt road and freeways. And before someone makes his usual snide remark, I paid for it with my own hard earned cash and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Torklift Suprthitch and the 24" Supertruss.

Towing the weight you have, I wouldn't settle for anything less.
  • You have 3" towing receiver?
About $25 buys you 2 ft of 3x3x1/4" tubing. With some filing your 2.5 adapter will go inside to make perfect extension for 2" ball holder.
