Towing with Tailgate Down ?

Buying an F-150 and plan on carrying my motorcycle in the bed. Question: Is there going to be enough clearance between tailgate down (nothing sticking over)and trailer. I know sharp turns and positioning the trailer for camping might come into play. But generally speaking for traveling is what I'm most concerned with, not load capacity and such. Thanks !

  • My tailgate hits the hitch ball when lowered even without the trailer attached. Sounds like a problem as sharp turns are sometimes needed getting in/out of filling stations. Is a long bed a possibility for you so that the motorcycle does not sit on the tailgate?
  • Probably won't know until you hook it up. The 2009+ F-150 bed height is higher, therefore tailgate taller and extends farther. You may be able to take it completely off.

I highly recommend a 3/4 ton if you want a motorcycle in the bed and tow a TT.
  • The tongue jack most likely will be in the way. On my previous TT I could just barely miss the tongue jaco with the tailgate when parked straight. Maybe just remove the tailgate.
  • I think you will have problems with the tailgate down, but you should be fine if you take it off.
