I have a 24 foot travel trailer with an equalizer hitch. My pickup can handle the tongue weight OK without it hooked up. I was wondering if it's OK to tow a travel trailer using the equalizer stinger ...

The Equalizer has bolts that, by friction, hold the ball up. Without the tension bars in place, you are stressing the friction point with all of the weight. Hit a bump... and the stress is multiplied. I wouldn't use the head without the bars.
