Not towing. If you're the type of driver that when coming to a passing lane just falls in line with the rest of the cars then I think you'll be okay with the Tacoma and 4000+lbs towing.
However if you're the type of guy that will pull out and pass when the opportunity arises then IMO you won't like the sluggish tow you'll get with the Tacoma.
I'm the 2nd guy. I don't like to sit behind slower drivers. When towing I like to be able to maintain my speeds up hill, not 1/2 floored wound out to 4000rpms at 45-50mph. Living in Oregon I'm constantly going up and down.
I speak from experience with an 06 Frontier 2wd, AT V6. I towed a 4050lb TT, 22'Lx9'9"H. I didn't really enjoy it. In fact after just a couple trips I traded it off on an 08 F150 2wd 5.4 3.73 AT. Way, way nicer towing. Picked up 2 more mpg also. I went from 8.5 to 10.5. Handling wasn't the issue. It was power. The guy with the 6sp has the better setup IMO. He has better control over gearing. Also downhill braking would seem to be better.
