I had a 2007 4.0 V6 TRD OffRoad Tacoma with the tow package that, IIRC, was rated to tow 6500lbs.
I only had it for one summer, and towed a 1500-1800lb tent trailer. I was surprised how hot the transmission would get on dirt roads, and how easily the truck would downshift at 70 mph. The trailer was literally the size of the bed of the Tacoma.
Based on my experience I am not sure I would tow a hard side with a Tacoma, but I see lots of people doing it.
If you do get a hard side trailer I would used the 80% rule as a max for tow weight, getting anywhere close to max tow rating a with a TT would be too much, IMHO, for a Tacoma.
