Toyota Tacoma tow vehicle

This may have been covered somewhere already, but I couldn't find it, so here I go.

I've got a 23 ft hybrid with a unloaded vehicle weight of 3303 that I've been towing with a 2000 Chevy Suburban 4x4. The Suburban has over 200K on it and its time to retire it.

I'm looking at the Toyota Tacoma 4X4 which boasts a towing capacity of 6400 lbs, but its only a V6. Its towing package comes with a oil tranny coolers. I would install an electric brake controller on it.

We don't tow a lot, a handful of trips a year, most less than 50 miles each way. I'd also be using it to tow my boat, but its a 15ft Boston Whaler, so not a lot of weight there.

So, anyone here use a Tacoma to tow a similar size (or larger) trailer, and what are your experiences?

Thanks

  • HL V6 has more HP but less torque than Tacoma V6. Different engines. You should be fine. I've read comments that some have had to add air bags or similar to deal with the rear sag, but a WD hitch would be a good alternative if you wanted to use one. Your drive train should be good, just lock out overdrive.
  • I'm towing a 17 ft TT with about the same weight with my Highlander which I "guess" has the same V6 as a Tacoma. I think I might buy a Tacoma myself one of these days.

  • I had a 2007 Tacoma Pre Runner with the tow package. I towed a 23' Jayco that weighed in at 4900#. The truck did not lack power when towing it, though I knew it was back there. It was like towing a large shoe box!
Get a good WDH and brake controller and you'll be fine. I also used some mirror extensions which made it much easier when towing.
    Good luck and have fun.
