I recall this issue when I owned my old 2000 Tundra that I bought used off a gentleman, had a 60K miles when I bought it. Unfortunately the prior owner did not have the upgraded brakes installed, which he could have for free. It really was not a "recall" but a TSB that would authorize the dealer to upgrade the brakes if the customer complained. Some had know problems and many did. There was an old post on tundrasolutions.com about 7 years ago in which a guy pulled all the later model parts off a Tundra from a junk yard and did the upgrade himself.
Thanks Ron3rd. I think I ran across that Tundrasolutions thread you mentioned. It is beyond my skills and motivation, though. Sounds like your Tundra had the brake vibrations? Mine has been fine until a long trip this summer towing the TT where I suspect I pushed them too hard. I think I brake wisely, but if the calipers are inadequate then I suppose it was inevitable that I'd get the problem. My TT is a bit big for this truck, too. I've owned the truck for 3 years and the TT for 2.
I had the brake vibration after we bought the truck and turned th rotors and put new brake pads on and that was fine for a while. Funny thing is, the upgraded new Toyota rotors (per the TSB) were not bigger in diameter, but they might have been thicker, I don't remember.
I towed the old trailer in my sig, about 6500 lbs loaded for about 4 years. I replaced the rotors with some slotted rotors, but I don't think there were any better than stock. The vibration returned after about 2-3 years. I sold the truck in '07 and it was still a very good truck, just probably needed new rotors. I think the towing did them in.
If I were doing it again, I would just shop around for the stock rotors and replace them. You can get them for 50-60 bucks if I recall. Then, if they last you 2 or 3 years, you're only out about a 120 bucks and you can just replace them again.
