Toyota/Cummins.........maybe

That's all good but if they don't increase the trucks towing and cargo capacity I would have no use for it.
Now a Tundra 3/4 ton with the cummins?.......that would get my attention.

It is unfortunate that Toyota doesn't want to manufacture a light diesel for their pickup trucks. They make a bullet proof inline 6 diesel for their industrial forklifts and they manufacture the Hino truck and motors.

Going back a few years was it Toyota that had a small diesel in a small pu?

A 3/4 ton Toyota with any diesel engine would peak my curiosity.

Yes. An old Top Gear episode demonstrated it was a tough little truck. They roped it up, let the tide come in and submerged it, ropes broke and it was rolled about. Several hours later it was left on the sand. They righted it, cleared the cylinders of salt water, sprayed in some WD40 and it started up and drove away.

I had an 86 version running on gas. Wish the diesel had been available here. As far as I know they were available in Canada and the last year of production was 85.

Don't know about Toyota, but Izuzu sold a small pickup comparable to the the Toyota Hilux (or whatever the model name was then) that had a 4 cyl. normally aspirated diesel in it. Was gutless, but got great fuel mileage..............which is probably the reason behind Toyota considering the small Cummins V8 diesel for use in the Tundra. The deadline for the outrageous CAFE numbers the EPA imposed on manufacturers is only like 2 years away. An "off the rack", engine already certified to current EPA emissions standards with good fuel economy, is a fast (and cheap) solution for Toyota. Towing/hauling prowess probably has nothing to do with it.

A 3/4 ton with the 5.7L/4:30 would have gotten my attention. They already had the drive train. They had 7 years to come up with a major change and they didn't come through. All that was needed was a suspension under an already good truck, and walla, instant 3/4 ton truck. Obviously Toyota is happy with their place in the 1/2 ton market so I moved on to a F250.

Very sad, but very true. Ford showed that they could sell the F250 with the anemic 5.4 V8. Toyota has the better 5.7 and solid 6 speed transmission but to date hasn't offered a heavier frame and suspension. I would trade my 2010 Tundra for a HD version with about 2300 lbs payload in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately it looks like my next truck won't be a Toyota. I will outgrow my payload long before I expect this Tundra to die.

I'm not sure why Toyota and Nissan would look to an outside producer like Cummins for a diesel. I thought they had plenty of their own diesels in non North American markets to pick from. Good for Cummins though, they had a good reputation for a reason.
