TR: Part I Exploring Cottonwood Canyon Rd and The Burr Trail
This is a tribute TR for all those who have forged ahead with their Truck Campers :)
Our relatives look like rockstars after selling their house in San Diego 10 years ago for a massive price tag and Moving to Colorado Springs. This would be our third trip from San Diego to CS over Thanksgiving and this time I wanted to travel through some of the "backroads". We Started in San Diego to St. George and the trip report starts in the Grand Staircase at Cottonwood Canyon Road. It is a pretty long report so I will include Part I and Part II.

Time to break in Wolfy II and get er dirty
Checking out the cottonwood river:
We took our kids out of school for a week to give them a geology lesson in the "field"
We were thinking of stopping by the poplular Narrows slot canyon hike along the route but we opted for the more challenging "Round Valley Draw"
the cottonwood canyon road is pretty easy, but the side road round valley draw requires 4wd
Our Campsite for the night: free and not another soul around
Since it was Monday we started the day off with some school work
After a morning of work we headed out to recess down the wash and to the entrance of the Slot Canyon
I went down first to investigate and make sure it was safe
To get into the Slot requires a 15 foot shimmy with the hips, legs and booty. It would have been easier to bring a rope. We lowered the kids down and I provided the necessary foot holds.

Heading back up the wash back to camp
We headed into Escalante, checked out the Animals at the Visitors Center and the kids got their junior scientist badges
Next on the agenda was HWY12 to the Burr Trail and Wolverine Canyon.

We made our way into Boulder and the start of the Burr Trail
I topped my gas tank off and tried to clean my windshield

We turned off the Burr Trail onto Wolverine Canyon Road loop as we had another field trip to go on
The Wolverine Petrified Forest: Fortunatly we only had to take our kids and not a bus load of others carrying their "brown bags"
luckily we didn't need to "brown bag" it either and all of our food was stowed in our TC

Heading out we felt like we were in a time machine going back to a planet a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
there were gnarly looking creatures
and creatures of magic
they could turn wood to stone
they appeared nice and friendly
so I took some of their pictures
but they somehow also got a picture of me :0
even the clay was turned to stone

when we stopped at the visitor center in Escalante the ranger said the wolverine canyon road was just an okay drive, nothing spectatular. I beg to differ. This area is one of the most special places I have ever been.

We looped back around to re-connect with the Burr Trail

heading down the switch backs my daughter had her head out the window snapping pictues and My DW was so nervous she started to suck her thumb :)
we headed out south toward Lake Powell, and ended up at Stanton Creek Primitive Camp near bullfrog marina. Will get part II started later. Hope you enjoyed the trip, this area is absolutley spectacular!! and thanks to all those who have forged on before and shared their experiences.
