I check mine each time I leave for a trip. As I'm going down a residential street I get up to 20 mph and fully engage the trailer brake manually using the controller as I pass a driveway. If I stop smoothly by the time I reach the next driveway I call it good. I'm guessing it to be about 80' or so.
Not a very scientific approach but gives me the warm fuzzy to keep going.
If it's a jerky, harsh stop your gain is too high. Play around with it until it feels right.
