Trailer brake problem?
We have a new Cougar 27RLSWE.
4th trip with it. Trying to get the trailer brakes set just right, I kept turning it up and have it at full power (setting 10). At full power at low speed (using the thumb button) the wheels still won't lock, and while driving I'd like a little more braking power (still stops plenty well and safely behind our truck).
Note: same truck with a built in controller (2012 ram 2500), on our last trailer I could lock the wheels at low speed using the thumb button at setting 4 and kept it at 3-3.5 (much smaller trailer).
This weekend, after a 4 hour haul over a couple passes, one wheel was pretty hot (could touch for a few seconds before having to pull away). Other three were fine.
Hub is full of lube so my guess was brakes. Just taking a stab in the dark i turned the controller down to 6 for the trip home and tried to downshift and use the exhaust brake more coming down the passes. When I got home (checked in route too) it was perfectly normal temp on all four. The previous hot one was no warmer then the others.
I'm going to take it back to the dealer as soon as I can, but any ideas what is going on? My best guess is the other three wheels aren't braking as much as they should? Or a caliper/shoe problem?
