Trailer extension

I'm sort of in the market for a new truck camper and maybe a new truck. I'd like to start pulling a fishing boat or cargo trailer behind my rig at times. I can buy a camper that ends at the tailgate of a truck or one that hangs over. If I buy the maximum camper, I'll have to use the extension. I'd like to hear from those who have had experience with the extension. Would I be better off getting a truck with the 8' bed and then buying a camper that had no overhang or is the extension manageable as long as I observe the reduced weight/towing capacity that is necessary with them?

  • We have a TC that overhangs, and we pull an enclosed cargo trailer for our Scooter. We had to put on a 30" extension. It works great. To me, as long as you do not overload the extension as instructed, then it is safe. I do not think it would be allowed by law if it was not safe (when following the weight limits).
Our trailer tongue weight is less than 200lbs. when fully loaded with our stuff.
  • I tow with a camper that ends at the bumper. Thinking about a bigger camper, but the hitch thing is a bit of a concern.
  • I think if you are willing to pay the price for the necessary hitch extension and related parts, you will have no issues. You may need a weight distribution hitch and extension. Like most things, there will be compromises. For example, the longer the extension, the less weight your trailer can carry, and the less your boat can weigh. If you look at the rigs of other TC'ers, you will get a pretty good idea as to what you can do. If you choose to split hairs with decal weights, you will probably have to make more compromises.

I only flat tow my Samurai with my present setup, but have towed several different trailers with other trucks/TCs in times past.

  • I got lucky when I bought my camper. It came with all the tie down stuff, brackets and a hitch extension. I gotta be honest though, even though I've got airbags and a dually, see the length of that thing makes me nervous (over 2' truss style). Even with the beefy turn buckles that attach to the frame and mid extension. The PO said he regularly towed his enclosed race car trailer with it and camper, all on a bagged 3/4ton.

I'm interested to see what others say (haven't towed with the camper on yet) as I'm debating using the extension or extending the tongue of my trailer.
