Trailer length and towing

I am looking at travel trailers and am curious if there is a big difference in maneuvering/handling between trailers under 30 feet and over 30 feet? There are a couple in the 33-36 foot range I like, but it seems with the hitch it would make moving through towns or campgrounds tough? Appreciate any feedback on the subject.

  • One of the things I notice when reading these responses is that I can't visualize the type of "campground", or RV park that is being referred to. I find that our 25' 5er has a harder time maneuvering than our old 18 footer. The way I generalize a response would be: "the longer your setup, the fewer places you will fit into". Really helpful, huh? :)
  • I tow a 35' trailer and my truck is around 20'. So it's a significant length all together. Having said that, I've had no problems finding a place to camp or getting around in the parks. Did have one tough time when I was in Beavers Bend in Oklahoma and went down the wrong loop looking for a camping site. Wasn't so much the roadway, that was fairly easy to get around. It was the camps with the extra vehicles sticking out on the roadway. Made it tough with all the trees and extra bumpers but I made it. Didn't think I was going to at first and got a bit nervous. My wife said I missed the car by about 2 inches.
  • We currently have a 31.5 foot TT and do find it a bit harder to get around town with than our old 28 foot TT was to pull around town. So far I have lost two tires by going over curbs. Finding campsites is also a bit harder but not a real probem, just some of the older campsites are a little smaller and closer together than I like.

There a lots of RV'ers that pull 30-40 foot TT without a problem just a matter of practice, planning and knowing where they can and can not go.
  • Depends on how much under 30 ft you are used to and how long the tow rig and length of the new trailer when it comes to moving around in tight places. You could have a harder time finding spots because of the longer length and a lot of forest service/ state parks sites will be out because of the added length. That said, Ours is over 30ft and we usually do not have a problem finding a spot.

I have an Acadia towing a 19' hybrid so I really don't know anything about this :) but.... I would guess anything over 27' or so won't make a difference. What size truck do you have? That adds to the turning ability. I would like to hear from the seasoned pros on this.

Truck makes a big difference, just like you stated.

I've had the same trailer and towed it with three different vehicles. The first was an Acadia, and it was very easy to manage due to the short turning radius and overall length of the Acadia. Then I got a crew cab sierra with an 8 foot box, and it was difficult to manage. Now I have a crew cab Sierra with the 5.5 foot box and it is nearly the same to manage as the Acadia was.

I'm in no means suggesting easy to manage around tight corners has anything to do with overall handling of the rig. The most stable towing experience I've had was with the crew cab 8 foot box, very long truck. My trailer is 30 feet long (34 actual from end to end) and has not been much of an issue to fit into camp sites.

  • We have a 35ft TT and have never had a problem towing through towns or campgrounds or finding appropriate sized sites.
